After much searching throughout the western states to relocate our horse breeding ranch from the Monterey Bay area, my wife, Gayle, and I purchased 40 acres in Catheys Valley in 2001 and set about building our dream.

Mariposa County and especially Catheys Valley captured our attention with its slower-paced and affordable quality of life. With Yosemite National Park in its ‘backyard’ and the new University of California Merced in its ‘front yard’ we are enjoying a great blended life of nature and culture.

Mariposa county with its colorful history, present ‘green’ rural character, and the legacy of Yosemite and UCM for future generations is a place not too far and not too close. Only 2 hours from the San Francisco and Monterey Bay areas, 1 hour from Fresno and its International airport, and 2 ½ hours from Sacramento, it is in the heart of California, thus not too far.

Not too close either to the congestion of freeway gridlock and the landscapes of suburban sprawl, in fact, there is not one stoplight in the entire county and we are proud to say that. Large land conservancies have created an almost ’greenbelt’ barrier between the Sierra foothills and the valley, preserving a visual separation from the suburban sprawl well into the future. We enjoy day trips to almost any destination, without the aggravation of having to 'get through something' to get there. Land with room to roam is not scarce in a county with almost half its area in scenic national forest, wilderness, and Yosemite National Park.

I have been a ranch and home design consultant, a general contractor since 1976, and a retail business owner in Santa Cruz and Salinas for 26 years.
